Capturing a Hummingbird

This summer we added a hummingbird feeder to our yard.  Then the waiting game began.
It took about five days for them to find the feeder.

I read up on how to capture the best picture.  You can see how the pros do it HERE. But since I am not a pro and don't want to take the time to create a set up like they described, you get our kitchen window version.
So my son and I have been taking turns trying to catch these little guys in action.  We set out the camera near the window and this is what we have caught so far.
You can find a cheap feeder at your local hardware store.  Don't buy the premade nectar, make your own.
Mix 2 cups water and 1 cup white sugar in a pot and bring to a boil.  As soon as it comes to a boil take it off the heat and let it cool.  Since you should change out the food every few days, you don't need to fill up the feeder to the top.
They will be drawn to the red color and the smell of the sweetness.

Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird

They weigh about the same as 2.5 paper clips.

A resting humming bird can take up to 250 breathes per minute.

My attempt to grab a picture with my phone.  I love Instagram.
If you want to set up a feeder in your yard, go HERE. It has all the information you will need.
Thanks for stopping by my backyard!
Have a blessed day!

Foto Fridays

Foto Friday will be random pictures
I took through out my week.
I am trying to capture and share more of our everyday life.
They are mostly Instagram and Iphone pictures.
Our snowman melted!

We went to the travel show and saw
 Rick Steves and Samantha Brown.
Now I am in the mood to go on trip to Europe.

Chinatown in DC
We walked down to the back of the White House.
I am not sure why they let you get so close to the back
side of the White House.  On the front side you have to
stay really far away from the gate.  In this picture I
had my hands through the gate.
I understand why there wasn't too many visitors on the backside of the White House.  This is where all the protesters hang out.

 Then we had snow AGAIN!
See you next week.

Flower Foto Friday

The flowers down in the Dominican Republic
were so pretty.  Here are a few photos of the flowers
that were around our resort.

Love all the palms!

I couldn't find the name of this flower.

Have a great weekend!
